Catalina

about

Following on from the 7 years of constant touring that fuelled the EP 'Traveller", Monty's first 2 years as a father have defied him to delve deeply into what slowing down might uncover. The single "Catalina" gives us an intimate insight into this world, via the imaginary lens of whoever owned that abandoned trailer sailer down the road... There had to be a song in it!

lyrics

Take good care of her he said
Once the others had left us at his bed
7m Catalina fading on the sides so I painted it rhododendron up on dries
Under blue skies, spring of 85
Stowed the wooden box in last and crossed the bar just as dusk made silver of blues

Sailing on the seas they were wild and free
Never known grace to follow me like it did to Catalina
Sailing on the big wide open
I was always hoping you would come with me

There's a folded chart in the back of the black and white photograph
At the tiller with the killer handlebar moustache ooo that marks the castaway

He wouldn't say who had taken it, but no mistaking it was him
I knew they'd been his finest moments living in the bay
We'd never heard him talk much about those days

Sailing on the great wild ocean
No better potion salt and breeze
Sailing on the seas they were wild and free
Such a good place for the soul to be, just me and Catalina

Fold the mast, roll the memories in to the past
Close the doors, to the quarters that kept us through all of those storms
Park her in on the grass, abruptly cover with the neighbour's holey tarp
Now's just not the time, the winds have all blown by
His words are finally sinking after all of this time
I fear that I will be - come sedentary like the rest of 'em up this valley
Fine line between toil and foil, a harbour and to harbour
Oh Catalina, will we sail again?

Sailing on the seas they were wild and free
Never known grace in my days like then, just me and Catalina
Sailing on the big wide open
I'll be always hoping you will come with me
come with me
