lyrics

Hokia ōu maunga kia purea koe e ngā hau o Tāwhirimātea

Rise early, mission to untame these days that all burn the same
Pack all the embers down I'll be back in town, just a few days
Out into the crispy dawn, the day is born and holding
Still as glass what a day for the pass, headed west on Highway 73

Diesel hums the engine as I narrow my intention, man of very few
Radio plays nothing at all, with the window down to hear the call
To the young, waterfalls among, boulders in ravines, every shade of green
Goes flickering past in my periphery cast their long shadows across this wonderland

Follow the fenceline down to the river, like a border it flows before me
Shimmers and sparkles among deep and dark pools that whirl themselves around
My plunging feet for it looks to me like I've found a way across
I can feel myself unravelling inside, with time to bide, and open

It's me again, I can breathe in, haven for the humble in these hills
I've come seeking refuge from the wrecking ball
Where tomorrow and yesterday mean nothing at all
High pitched organ sounds across the stones
Like blood over bone
Crystal blues turn green then gold as they carry on up to the alpine snow
Glistening blankets, draped over these black, serated crests
Hawks circle overhead, carry the spirits of the dead over the tops
We're on the path here to the leaping off but I carry my own

I wash my hands in the stream
That trickles out to sea
